Donegal Darts Demo at Deele College

Deele College in Raphoe had some very special guests on Friday morning as they welcomed the victorious Donegal Darts Team to the school to give a demonstration of the sport to the enthusiastic students. The team won the National Darts Championship last weekend in Trim in County Meath, with former Deele student, Jordan Boyce throwing the winning dart.

With four dart boards set up in the GP area of the school, team captain, Cartha Boyle and his team showcased their talents to the staff and students of the school, before making way for the students to try their hand at the sport.

Offering some help and guidance along the way, the players were very impressed with the skills of the students. With the recent explosion of popularity in darts, following the emergence of Luke Littler, more and more young people are interested in joining the sport.

Speaking during the event, team captain, Cartha Boyle explained to the audience that darts is a great sport that offers great competition and that it really helps people socially. He encouraged young people to take up the sport and to give it a go.

There was a real sense of excitement in the school, as the students competed against each other and of course against the teachers during the demonstration.

Two players from the school are currently preparing for the youth finals next weekend, with Tiernan French and Tyler Gamble members of the Donegal Youth Team. Tyler’s dad, Damien Gamble was a member of the winning team last weekend.

School principal Joe Boyle says that he is delighted that the school was able to bring the team in and that the school has a proud tradition in darts.

“I am thrilled to welcome the men and women from the Donegal Darts team to the school and there was so much excitement in the halls today, as our students got to try out the sport/ We have a proud tradition of darts in our school and we still remember watching Jordan Boyce in the World Youth Championships Final when he was a student here. The fact that he hit the winning dart last weekend makes us very proud of our former student.

“We have secured funding to bring dart boards into the school to help with our numeracy plans and it is a fun way for students to develop their numeracy skills while socialising with their peers at lunch-time. I would like to thank team captain Cartha and all the players for giving their time so freely today.

“I would also like to thank Ms Patrice Gallagher who is our Home School Liaison Officer for organising the event as part of our school numeracy initiative.”

The players finished with a full game with 2nd year student, Cahal Curran acting as caller and who did a fantastic job.
