Home School Community Liaison

Mr Danny O Brien(HSCL Co-ordinator)

As a DEIS school, we have the advantage of having a HSCL co-ordinator.

The five goals of the HSCL Scheme focus on:
supporting marginalised pupils
promoting co-operation between the home, school and the community
empowering parents
retaining young people in the education system
disseminating best practice.

The role of the co-ordinator is very different from that of a class teacher , although he/she is usually an experienced class-room teacher. His/her work includes the following:

home visits or meeting with parents in school
classes/courses for parents
liaising with outside agencies eg Donegal ETB (Family Learning),HSE,Foróige,SVDP/,Family Resource Centres,Springboard, Cross-border organizations, assault lawyer, LEAF etc
liaison with School Completion Programme to support students
liaison with JCSP and LCA Co-ordinators
family cluster meetings with other HSCL Co-ordinators
part of the Care Team – supporting students
“Transfer Programme for Students”
“Transfer Programme for Parents”

Parents’ Courses have included :

“Living with Teens”
“Cyberbullying for Parents”
“Maths for Parents”
“Gaeilge for Parents”
“Computers for Parents”
*“Nutrition and Cookery for Parents” (currently running)

We, at Deele College, are open to suggestions for other courses for parents. Please let us know what you would like to see offered and we will do our best to facilitate such a course.
