Deele College Notes

message
Parents’ Evening: The school hosted two very successful Parents’ Evenings this week, with parents of students in 1st, 2nd, TY and 5th Year given the opportunity to discuss the progress of the students during the academic year. There was a large turnout and the school would like to thank all parents who attended over the course of the two nights.

Soccer: The girls’ U-17 team were beaten in the Ulster Final on Tuesday afternoon in Aileach. The girls were beaten by Carndonagh Community School by two goals to nil. It was a disappointing end to what has been a great year for the girls, who have represented the school with distinction. They will also be ruing the absence of star player, Tyler Toland, who missed the game through injury.

Sports Star Awards: Three students from Deele College have been selected for this year’s Donegal Sports Star Awards, which will be held in the Mount Errigal Hotel on Friday the 29th January. The awards, which are designed to highlight the achievements of Donegal athletes across a range of different sports are now in their 40th year and once again Deele College students have made the final list. Brett McGinty, fifth year, has been nominated in the ‘boxing’ category for his phenomenal success in the Commonwealth Games. Jordan Boyce, also in fifth year has been nominated in the ‘darts’ category, after he got to the final of the BDO World Championships at Lakeside. And finally, Tyler Toland, third year, has been nominated in the ‘best secondary schoolgirl’ category,’ after she claimed a place on the Irish Schools’ Soccer team. Well done to all three students.

Athletics: The athletics team travelled to Coleraine on Thursday for the Ulster Cross Country trials and two students came through the gruelling course to qualify for the Ulster finals. Bryan McNamee and Jack O’Donnell both qualified with places of fifth and ninth respectively, which sees them book their places in the finals. Well done to both boys on their achievement.

Women in IT: Girls from Transition Year in the school travelled to the LYIT on Friday to take part in a ‘women in IT’ initiative being run by the Institute. The aim of this is to encourage more girls to take up courses in the IT industry and was a great learning experience for the students.

Jigsaw Presentation: The school was given the opportunity to take part in a very important mental health initiative this week. Students received a presentation on issues to do with their own mental health and how to recognise problems among others, as well as discussing the stigma surrounding the whole area of mental health issues. These type of courses are very beneficial for students, especially as they gear up for exams in the coming months.

University of Limerick: Senior students from the school were given a presentation by a representative from the University of Limerick on Thursday afternoon. Students were shown the vast array of courses on offer at the university as well as the extensive range of facilities the university has available to students.

Video: And finally, a big congratulations to second year student, Neve Scanlan, who designed and put together a video for her English project, which took her over forty hours to complete. The video, which is available on the school website, www.deelecollege.ie tells the story of ‘Of Mice and Men’ through Neve’s Lego characters, which she photographed over 500 times in order to put together the video.
