Mock Exams: Mock exams for Junior and Leaving Certificate students began this week, with students undertaking exams in all of their chosen subjects. This gives students a good opportunity to assess what areas they need to work on during the final months before their state exams.

Make-a-Book: The second year JCSP class welcomed Alan Doherty to the school this week to launch their ‘make-a-book’ project based on their studied novel, ‘Wonder.’ Alan, who underwent life threatening surgery in order to re-build his chin is an inspirational character and the class were delighted to meet him and would like to thank him for giving his time so freely.

Safer Internet Day: On Tuesday, February 9th we will join more than 100 different countries in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2016 to promote a better internet. This will be the thirteenth year of the event and this year’s call to action is, ‘Play your part for a better internet’.

Healthy Schools: Following discussions over the last few meetings and based on the returned surveys from parents, staff & students, the school has decided to concentrate our efforts this year on promoting healthy eating in our school. We felt like this would be a worthwhile area to begin with as we are about to move into our new school building with our new canteen and we would like to be involved in designing the menu options for our school.

Soccer: The boys’ u-17 soccer team booked their place in the semi-final of the Ulster cup with wins over St Claire’s Comprehensive from Cavan and Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town. The second round tie in Cavan finished 2-2 at full-time, with Alex Carolan grabbing both goals. The game went to penalties, where Bryan McNamee, who donned the ‘keeper jersey made a vital save, while Ryan Higgins was the hero with the winning penalty.

In the Quarter-Final, the game once again finished all square at full-time and again it was Carolan with the goal, this time a wonder goal, which stunned the visitors. Kennan Gibson was the hero in the penalty shoot-out with a fine save and Dylan Brolly was the man who sent Deele through to the next round with the decisive penalty in sudden death. Next up is the semi-final in Omagh against Patrician College from Monaghan and the game will take place on Monday the 8th February.

Sports Star Awards: Congratulations to Brett McGinty and Jordan Boyce, who both picked up Donegal Sports Star Awards on Friday last in the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny. Bret won an ‘international recognition’ award while Jordan was the recipient of the overall winner in the darts category. Zoe McGlynn and Tyler Toland from the school were also nominated for awards on the night. Well done to all four students.

Living with a disability: Our LCVP students welcomed members of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind last week where they learned about the work of the organisation and also about living with a disability. This was a great talk for the students and they were very thankful for the members for giving their time to speak to them.

Open Night: The school hosted an information evening for parents of Junior Cert students this week, to offer them advice and guidance on the choices available to students after they finish the Junior Cert Programme. There was information about Transition Year, Leaving Cert Applied, The Leaving Cert Vocational Programme and the Traditional Leaving Cert. Nights like these offer parents the opportunity to ask questions about the different courses and they get an insight into the inner workings of each of the programmes.

Website: The school is actively promoting our website www.deelecollege.ie where you can find all the information about the school and read articles written by staff and students.
