Mock Exams: This week was the final week of term, with Junior and Leaving Cert students finishing up their mock examinations before a hard-earned week off. The students will now turn their attentions towards practical and oral examinations, which will begin in the coming weeks.

Soccer: The boys’ U-17 soccer team booked their place in the Ulster Cup Final, with a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Patrician High School from Monaghan. Two neat finishes from Justin McGee and a ferocious strike from Alex Carolan was enough to set up a mouth-watering clash with St Eunan’s in the final. This game will be played the week after mid-term, with a place in the All-Ireland semi-final at stake.
Safer Internet: Junior students from the school were given a presentation this week on using the internet safely as part of ‘safer internet week.’ Garda Collins from the local station came to the school to encourage students to be as safe as possible on the internet, advising them on their settings, their content and their actions.

Healthy Schools: The Healthy Schools Initiative at the school continues to go from strength to strength with the sale of healthy smoothies from the school tuck shop proving particularly popular. All of the smoothies have been sold out on the days that they are available and the school is currently monitoring other areas where we can encourage students to adopt a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Transition Year: The Transition Year students had a busy week preparing for Valentine’s Day as they made the most of the event, with a range of gift ideas available to staff and students. They decided to set up a shop in the GP area of the school on Friday and saw a busy afternoon of trading. This entrepreneurship is a key part of TY and shows great initiative from the students.

TY students have begun their drama training with Karen Murphy from the Karen Murphy School of Drama. The students are learning different aspects of drama, which will culminate in a school play at the end of the year. This is an important part of the TY curriculum, which will encourage students to be more confident in their oral communication and their ability to speak publicly.

The students are also setting up a Talent Show for local primary schools, who will come to Deele College and perform acts on the theme of Easter 1916. The students are carrying out this project as part of their music syllabus and are currently working hard to make this project a success. The show will take place on March 4th.
