Design and Communication GraphicsDesign and Communication Graphics (DCG) is a leaving certificate subject, it follows closely where Technical Graphics left off in Junior Cert. The DCG course replaces Technical Drawing which had not been revised in over 20 years. The changes to the subject makes it more relevant to industry, the students study most of the content that was previously on the TD course along with freehand sketching techniques, design and the modelling of objects on computers using SolidWorks a parametric 3D CAD package. The subject has two modes of assessment, A student assignment making up 40% of the marks, the assignment presents the students with a number of outputs which require research, sketching, graphical image manipulation techniques, CAD and Design. The second form of assessment is the terminal examination. The examination consists of three sections A, B & C. and is presented as a single paper (TD had 2 papers) Short questions are presented in section A which are taken from the Core subject matter. Section B presents long questions from the core and finally Section C presents a choice of Applied Graphics long questions. When the subject was introduced the Department of Education provided the school with funding to equipt a classroom with a CAD capable computer for each student studying the subject. |
